Shreveport United Women Blasts Into History With Big Win

Published on

Alexandria, LA (May 25th, 2002) – The Shreveport United Women didn’t just want to announce that they were playing in their first match in history, they wanted to make it a goal party.   Shreveport United Women on the road in Pineville at Louisiana College put up a 5-0 win over Alexandria Pool Girls FC on Wednesday night.  United (1-0-0) will compete in the Women’s Division of the GCPL for the first time this year.   The big win puts them currently in second place in the nine-team division.  They will face teams from Louisiana (Lafayette, Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Shreveport), Alabama (Daphne), and Mississippi (Jackson, Clinton, Hattiesburg, Biloxi).

In the 12th minute, Kalli Matlock from Louisiana. Tech broke away from the defender of the wing and found Peyton Pipes on a cross to score the first goal.  Other chances were tried but no luck and the lead would hold through to halftime.

The two teams had extended halftime as an hour-long lightning delay occurred

United unleashed a goal barrage in the second half.   Loyola’s Mary Helen Burford buried a 30-yard long shot in the 55th minute to push their lead to a two-goal lead.  Just two minutes later, United struck again as LSUS’s Chelsea Brown broke away from her defender and found Matlock with a far-post shot to make the match 3-0.  Matlock struck again with the fourth goal in the 71st minute.   In the 79th minute, Centenary’s Aubrey Burkhardt was fouled in the box and scored her penalty shot making the match 5-0, and holding on for the win.
