The 2019 Gulf Coast Premier League will wrap up it’s 4th season this Saturday when the top two seeded clubs face off in Covington. In their short history together, Northshore United of Covington and FC New Orleans have surely built a great rivalry with both clubs facing off twice in the 2019 regular season with the north side boys coming out on top with a 1-0 win in New Orleans and a 3-3 draw in Covington.
Northshore United advances to the 2019 GCPL Cup with narrowing 1-0 win vs. Western Conference new boys, Louisiana Krewe, on Wednesday. The Covington club saw success early in the 2019 season which helped lead them to the #1 seed for the playoffs. Zachary Breaux and Mason Morise both have attributed to 50% of Northshore’s attacking power during the regular season with Breaux leading the club with 7 goals. The defensive front for United gave up the least amount of goals in the Central Conference during regular season play. Keeper JP Furman and centerback, Ethan Garvey, have both played a large roll in keeping other clubs at bay.
FC New Orleans finds themselves being the first team since Gaffa FC in 2017 with a chance to win the GCPL Cup in their first year in the GCPL. The New Orleans crew reached the final with an impressive 4-0 victory versus the Western Conference champs, Boca FC. Golden Boot winner, Roger Llergo, has been engine on the attacking front for the Gators with the help of emerging 16-year-old, Erick Gunera. Having to miss majority of the season due to an injury earlier in the campaign, keeper Eduardo Salazar’s return came at the right time as the former Cruz Azul tower has only allowed two goals beyond his sticks.
This will be the third meeting this season between both clubs. The battle for supremacy in the GCPL will kickoff this Saturday at 7pm in Covington at Northlake Christian High School Stadium. The two clubs will be battling to be the first from Louisiana to lift the GCPL Cup.
